Episode 19 - It's a Wocka, Wocka, Wocka World!

Everyone's a comedian...or are they? In the latest episode of Derailed Trains of Thought (your one and only (please?) storytelling podcast), Tim and Nick tackle the hard work of dissecting what makes the audience laugh. (It's a function of the lungs and/or stomach in 86.15% of cases.)

In the second half, we examine the science fiction German silent film "Metropolis" in Cinema Selections, proving that 80-year-old movies are still cool.

So take a listen and learn that the mediator between the head and the hands is the funny bone!*

*Obtuse joke to be found funny only after listening to the entire podcast. Maybe.

  1. The version of Metropolis (1927) that we discussed on this podcast is called "The Complete Metropolis", released in 2010 by KINO International. This edition is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD. This is the only edition that contains the complete film with the re-recorded soundtrack.

  2. I'm kinda weird when it comes to comedy. Many different things make me laugh. I like slapstick, which is considered to be "low comedy," but I also like intelligent humor (the kind where the punchline may not hit you until a second later, or you have to be smart to get it). I'm also fond of what I like to call "nerd humor," the kind of comedy you see in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" or in "Red vs. Blue." I typically don't go for "dirty jokes" unless they're done in a clever fashion, which they rarely are.

I can attest that writing comedy is hard. I've written a few short comedy films and a whole comedy novel. You have to find a rhythm, and that can be difficult to find starting off. Once you find it, the jokes start firing off like a machine gun.

I would've thought I'd have more to say on this subject, but I can't think of anything else.
