I've been reflecting on this idea for some time. I remember hearing some say one reason why the Joker was more popular than Batman when The Dark Knight came out was because the Joker was an active character while Batman was reactionary. I don't think that's entirely true, but Batman reacting to the Joker fit with that story. The Joker is a force of nature who bursts onto the scene, so Batman has to respond.
Like you, I've also been thinking about this in our own personal stories. There are people who do become passive in their lives, and it leads nowhere. However, there are those so determined to be active that they lose themselves. The happy middle ground is hard to find. But as Christians, I do think we have to find it. It's hard for me because I've been on both sides of the extremes.
