Yeah, this comes from the kaiju kick I'm on, but Godzilla has fallen victim to overhype. The 1998 Godzilla is infamous for this. The promotional campaign was insane. The signs on buses said, "His foot is as big as this bus." Huge posters on towers said, "He's as big as this building." The merchandising was everywhere. What did audiences get? A typical '90s blockbuster with all the problems of a '90s blockbuster and then some.
To some extent, the recent "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" has suffered from overhype. Warner Bros. overdid the trailers, which revealed too much, and made it look like too much like an overcompensation for the so-called "faults" of the previous film.
